On Thursday February 20, the Racial Justice Group invites everyone to join them in Fellowship Hall starting at 9 to hear David and Pamela Purdy speak about their work and experiences as they have traveled the country with “Icons of the Civil Rights Movement” – a selection of artworks and writings created by the Purdys beginning in 2007 to commemorate historical leaders and ordinary citizens who participated in the struggle to end racism.

Twelve of the mixed media artworks created by Pamela Chatterton-Purdy are hanging in the office hallway.  You will recognize many of them, but some will be new to you.  Each icon comes with a story written by David Purdy about the person and their role in the difficult and painful work for justice and equality during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950’s and beyond.

The Purdys are residents of Harwich and have been the recognition and awards for their work, including:

  • “The Olive Branch Award” from the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), Cape Cod Chapter, 2017
  • The National Center for Race “Medal of Honor” Award at the annual Race Amity Conference in Quincy MA, 2012
  • Cape Cod NAACP “Unsung Heroes” Award, 2011
  • Barnstable County Human Rights Commission “Cornerstone Award” for honoring the heroes of the Civil Rights Movement.
